New online job posting figures Abridged: The Conference Board
NEW YORK, NY -- The Conference Board Help-Wanted OnLine Data Series -- which made its debut July 19 -- shows that there were just over 2 million first-time, online job postings appearing on major Internet job boards in June. This figure is essentially unchanged from May and up from 1.8 million new job ads posted online in April. That means there were 1.39 new online jobs advertised for every 100 people in the labor force (which includes people now working and those seeking jobs).
The Conference Board's new online data series provides a monthly count of unduplicated help-wanted job ads posted for the first time on over 1,200 major Internet job boards, including the largest boards as well as some smaller boards that serve niche markets and smaller geographic areas.
Janet Norwood, former Commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said: "This new online help-wanted series is another in the broad array of economic data published by The Conference Board. The Conference Board is to be congratulated on its use of the latest technology in data collection and on its willingness to stimulate user comments to assist The Board in its continuous efforts to improve the quality of its data."

Describe your ideal job Abridged: Lockergnome LLC.
LOS ANGELES, CA -- This is one of those general questions that interviewers often throw at potential employees. There is no right or wrong answer to this question. It just gives an interviewer a glimpse at your personality and the responses can be used to weed out potential candidates. Your answer will also indicate to an interviewer whether your goals are in line with those of their company.
The best thing you can do is prepare for this question before going for into the interview. Answering this question does require you to take a look at what your strengths and weaknesses are, what you have liked and disliked about your current and previous jobs, and where you would like to go with your career in the future.
Keep in mind though that this is not the time to rant about all the things you disliked about previous jobs. Once you've thought about the things you have disliked, you can then describe an ideal job as the opposite of what you have disliked. Although this seems like a lot to tackle, the best thing you can do is be honest and of course professional.
Despite more jobs, many unable to find work Abridged: The Seattle Times
SEATTLE, WA -- Washington employers had more than 70,000 job openings in May and yet there are more than 180,500 people in Washington still out of work. The tech industry had the second-highest number of vacancies -- nearly 3,600 unfilled software engineering and programming jobs. So why the gap? Explanations vary, but one theme is constant: Employers say they can't find enough skilled workers.
Bill Gates told educators Monday that Microsoft is struggling to find qualified college graduates. Another reason for the discrepancy is that some IT workers laid off during the recession failed to keep their skills current and lost their marketability. Employers are expanding their job descriptions, asking for a menu of skills that even the most experienced IT workers can't meet.
And some companies learned their lessons about hiring too quickly. Now they'd rather leave a job open than put the wrong person in it. "Our hiring practices are much more thorough than ... what was going on the market five years ago," said Susan Webber, human resources vice president for Concur Technologies, a software company with 410 employees. Despite needing to hire about 100 people a year, Concur takes about 40 days to fill a position.

Companies competing for shrinking work force pool Abridged: Nashville Business Journal
NASHVILLE, TN -- Finding good help isn't easy, particularly for manufacturing companies competing for skilled technical workers. And getting them is only half the problem: Manufacturers have to retain employees in a seller's market. The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) reports that 80 percent of manufacturers participating in a NAM study reported a shortage of qualified workers.
The prestige and benefits that come with a large company are great aids to attract highly-skilled employees, while small and mid-size manufacturing operations struggle to keep up. However, Mark Arms, vice president of sales and marketing for Quality Industries in Tennessee with about 530 employees, says his company has been successful with its retention efforts. For his company, a key to retaining employees is training. "Offering people training to improve their skills seems to be a big plus," he says.
Deb Woolley, executive director of the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce & Industry says the importance of training and education can't be overestimated. Growing a work force is the best recruitment tool for manufacturers, Woolley says, and an economically viable alternative for high school graduates to earn healthy salaries. "There's no such thing as an unskilled job in manufacturing anymore," she says. "There are unskilled jobs in the fast food industry."
